Advanced Age Spine Unit

About the Spine Unit

An evidence-based treatment approach that includes Geriatric Assessment and personalized risk analysis for diseases such as spine fractures and advanced age spine deformities (e.g., scoliosis) caused by calcification.

In Spine Health, a team approach that prioritizes the patient over treatment and adopts personalized treatment is embraced.

The most appropriate personalized treatment is determined through a collaborative and sharing decision-making process involving all relevant branch doctors, the patient, and their family. Treatment decisions are made collaboratively, not dictatively.

Non-surgical treatment methods are selected first and whenever possible.

In surgical treatment, priority is given to selecting minimally invasive closed methods, if possible.

The use of surgical simulation and risk calculators developed using artificial intelligence in the selection of personalized surgical treatment reduces the risk of complications and ensures more successful clinical outcomes.

The preparation of our elderly patients for surgery is evaluated by the geriatric council. In this way, comorbidities that increase the risk of surgical complications are identified and, if possible, improved before surgery to reduce the risk of complications.

The success rate of surgeries is increased thanks to a team of spine surgeons from different backgrounds, including neurosurgery and orthopedics.

The rehabilitation process before surgery (pre-hab) strengthens the back, lower back, hip, and leg muscles of the patients and prepares them better for surgery. Patients who learn the exercises and strengthen their muscles adapt more quickly to post-operative rehabilitation, and the recovery process is accelerated.

Constant communication between patients and physicians is ensured through the post-operative patient follow-up protocol.

Routine surveys conducted from the pre-operative preparation process allow for an objective assessment of quality of life, and immediate intervention is possible in case of any adverse events.

Radiographic and clinical data are collected in a database. They are regularly checked and evaluated. The obtained results are compared with other spine centers, enabling more successful treatment planning.
