Pathologic Vertebral Fractures

  1. In patients with osteoporosis or metastatic spine tumors, the internal architecture of the vertebra may weaken. This may result in fractures without an apparent trauma. This phenomenon is called pathologic fracture. The signs, symptoms and diagnostic work up are very similar to that of traumatic fractures

The treatment principals are also similar, however, the presence of osteoporosis should also be considered when treating pathologic fractures. Surgical treatment is technically more demanding due to the difficulty in achieving strong anchor points.
